The Key to Helping Your Child Do Better in School

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

Q: How can I help my child do better in school?

A: Children do well in school when they are engaged in the learning experience. As educators, we believe that children are most engaged when they are 1) interested in the topic and 2) tapped into their personal learning style.

  • Visual (spatial)

  • Aural (auditory)

  • Verbal (linguistic)

  • Physical (kinesthetic)

  • Logical (mathematical)

  • Social (interpersonal)

  • Solitary (intrapersonal)

What are the different learning styles of students?

Visual (spatial) learners learn through observation. They pay attention to pictures, images, diagrams, and whiteboards. These students are able to easily visualize information, and typically enjoy drawing or doodling.

Aural (auditory) learners enjoy music and sound, and generally have a good sense of rhythm. These students are good listeners who learn well through music, speeches, and verbal presentations.

Verbal (linguistic) learners prefer to use words, both in speech and writing. They naturally express themselves and typically love to read and write. Those who learn verbally tend to have an extensive vocabulary and become proficient speakers, debaters, and journalists.

Physical (kinesthetic) learners study their world through sense of touch by using their body or hands. Hands-on activities and sports are an integral part of these student’s lives. Getting hands-on experience is a must for these learners who love to tinker and learn best when they can do rather than see or hear.

Logical (mathematical) learners excel in using logic, reasoning and numbers. They are able to function and solve complex problems by using strategies and their scientific way of thinking. These students enjoy computer programming, math, and science.

Social (interpersonal) learners learn best through verbal or non-verbal communication with others. Social learners enjoy being around people, working in groups, and being part of a team. These social butterflies love sharing their knowledge with others. Interpersonal learners are famous for their ability to “read” people. This unique ability helps them to process and understand the world around them.

Solitary (intrapersonal) learners prefer to work and study independently. They are incredibly self-aware and attuned to their own thoughts and emotions. These learners prefer being in a quiet space away from crowds where they can focus on the task at hand.

How do I determine my child's learning style?

There are several ways you as a parent can figure out your child's learning style(s):

  • Get to know as much as you can about how your child learns and processes information.

  • Observe your child when he/she is performing tasks.

  • Identify your child’s strength and abilities.

  • Advocate for your child in support of differentiation of instruction.

  • Allow your child room to explore how they learn, to figure out what motivates them to study.

  • Set up a free consultation with Eagle Life Learning Foundation to discuss how determining your child's learning style is the key to helping them progress academically.
