Q: How do you deal with a teenager not doing well in school?
A: As parents, you want to do everything you can to make sure your teenager has a successful future. As your child grows into adulthood, it can be tricky to navigate your changing role as a parent.
There are a few things you can do to work with your child without butting heads or risking alienation.
1. Establish open lines of communication with your child.
Have an open, honest conversation about what is happening in your teenager's world. Spend quality time with your child, and focus on being a safe space for your child to share with you.
2. LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN!
Your teen wants to talk to you, but they may go on the defensive if they perceive they will be criticized, judged, or not heard. Practice active listening skills with your teenager to ensure they feel heard and understood.
3. Work with your child to formulate a plan to address his/her issues.
Put your detective hat on to find out what your teenager needs to achieve success. You will get a lot farther by collaborating with your child instead of trying to fix them.
