Q: Help! My child hates school, and I don't know why. What do I do?

A: There are reasons why your child dislikes going to school. As a parent, get ready to do some detective work to find out why. In order to get to the root of the issue, you will need to listen carefully, and non-critically to your child. Here are three things you can do:

1. Ask your child why they hate school.

The best way to open up the conversation is to approach from a place of compassion. Set aside time to talk, after spending some quality time with your child. When you ask why he/she hates school, don't negate his/her feelings. Seek to genuinely understand his/her viewpoint. Don't settle for one-word answers---probe for deeper responses, then give him/her the space to respond.

2. Ask your child what would change their perception about school.

Find out what would make school better for them. When kids hate school, find out what exactly they hate about school. For example, is it a teacher (or teachers)? Is it a subject, like math? Is it the schedule?

3. Make a plan to work together to make the changes happen.

As your child's greatest advocate, you are empowered to make adjustments for a better learning experience. One way to improve your child's learning experience is to identify their individual learning style. Did you know all children don't learn the same way? Find out what your child is interested in and how they learn to find materials and resources to use strategies to teach them based on their multiple intelligences.
